Hi Abstract! Hi FANS AND BLOWERS FOR COMBUSTION PROCESS.

Hi Abstract! Hi FANS AND BLOWERS FOR COMBUSTION PROCESS.

Hi INTRODUCTION

The burning of gas, oil, coal, or other combustible material requires air. When the end result of the burning is to be an efficient combustion process, in compliance with Federal and State Clean Air Act requirements, the volume of supply air must be reliably controlled. Insufficient air volume will result in wasted fuel and excessive particulate along with potentially explosive gases in the exhaust system. Too much air increases the amount of heat carried up the stack by the excess draft. Either extreme increases the cost and difficulty of controlling exhaust emissions.

Hi NATURAL AND MECHANICAL DRAFT

Air can be supplied to the combustion process by natural or mechanical draft. Natural draft simply refers to the use of a chimney or stack to induce an upward flow of air. The stack effect pulls air into the combustion chamber. The amount of airflow depends on the stack’s height and diameter, the prevailing wind velocity, and the resistance of the burner mechanism or fuel bed itself. The demand for air-cleaning apparatus on combustion systems, particularly oil and coal, has increased the overall system resistance to such an extent that natural draft alone is seldom sufficient. Mechanical draft refers to the use of fans or blowers to create airflow through the combustion area. When mechanical draft is incorporated, the chimney or stack is used primarily to direct the exhaust gases up and away where they will not be a nuisance. Because wind velocity and direction are less important, the combustion process can be much more carefully controlled. Mechanical draft is accomplished in one of two ways: when air is blown or forced into the combustion chamber it is known as forced draft; & when the air is drawn through the combustion chamber it is called induced draft. When both forced and induced draft are used, the system is termed a balanced-draft system. Generally, the fans or blowers used for induced-draft applications are larger and more expensive than those used for similar forced-draft applications. The combustion process itself
creates gases and elevated temperatures that expand the exhaust airstream, requiring fans with greater volumetric capacity than would be required on the supply side of the combustion process to supply clean, ambient air. Also, the hot exhaust serves to lower the density of the airstream, so density corrections must be applied to the fan static pressure (SP) to overcome the actual system resistance. The fact that the exhaust or flue gases are hot often requires induced-draft fans to be of a construction suitable for higher temperatures.

We wrote that Ziehl-Abegg demonstrated its new Owlet bionic fan blades, which are designed using nature's principles, made from lighter, castor oil-based plastic, and have sawtooth-edged blades to greatly reduce air turbulence and noise.

See the presentation first hand at their stand on the exhibition event of 2014 Germany at Hannover Messe. Visit link provided above for further event details & links.

So  lets first review a note or full extract of the press release by the organization describing its assembly of achievements in our manufacturing of Industry Products.

Double award for ZIEHL-ABEGG at Materialica The developer impresses the panel with the ZAplus complete system and a bionic bio-fan

“The two awards solidify our position as a technology leader”, says Dr. Walter Angelis, Technical Manager for Ventilation Systems at Ziehl-Abegg. The successful products were the ZAplus fan system and an innovative bionic bio-fan, which was presented for the first time just a matter of weeks ago. Both won awards at the Materialica Design + Technology Awards in Munich."

“The panel presented us with the Gold Award in the ‘Product’ category – this was for the sophisticated ZAplus complete system”, explains Angelis. The system integrates the fan, motor and control into a single, compact unit made from high-strength composite material. This optimises the airflow and spares the need for unnecessary packaging materials. The ZAplus system saves a great deal of energy and sets a new benchmark in terms of efficiency, going above and beyond the requirements of the EU Directive for energy-related products (ErP). The ZAplus fan system is used in supermarkets, hotels and refrigeration. In summer, the ZAplus was selected as the fan of the year at the international Plus-X-Award. When it came to the blade design, the developers took inspiration from the wing of an owl – the quietest bird of prey: spikes on the rear edge of the fan blade and a kink on the top edge help to reduce noise generation.

This bionic blade design also features in the second of our decorated products: the bionic fan consists of a bio-material, making Ziehl-Abegg a trendsetter once again. “The fan blade contains more than 60 per cent renewable sebacic acid, which is extracted from the castor oil plant”, explains Angelis. Neither the plant nor the castor oil itself are a foodstuff. The cultivation of this plant on low-nutrient ground means that it does not have an adverse effect on food production. The material also enables improvements with regard to chemical resistance, stability and weight. The bionic bio-fan is quiet, saves energy, reduces CO2 emissions and is 100 % recyclable. It is suitable for use in refrigeration, heating systems, heat pumps and electronics cooling. At Materialica, this product received the silver award in the ‘CO2’ category.
